Jian Zhan (建盏), or Jian Ware, refers to a kind of Chinese pottery that was originally made in Jianyang, China. Jian Zhan became prevalent during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Different kinds of Jian Zhan pottery exist, but bowls and cups are generally the most popular forms of craft. The crafting technique was registered as one of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China. Each piece of Jian Zhan is unique. Because both the glaze and the clay in Jianyang contain high iron content, after being fired by 1300℃ high heat over hours or even days, this natural combination composes a variety of colours and shapes of patterns.
